TOOL CHANGING 3D PRINTER PROOF OF CONCEPT
The primary goal of my 2020 capstone was to get in the weeds of 3D printing, and really push myself to learn. To do this I designed and built a proof of concept for the tool changing 3D printer.

The project is still a work in progress. My progress was severely slowed due to my lack of access to school facilities because of COVID-19. However, I have continued development of the machine in my spare time. I am currently in the tuning and tweaking phase and hope to be printing parts with it soon. So check back often if you are interested!

In the meantime, here is a montage of the build process so far!

TOOL CHANGING
This is a demo of the tool changing action of the printer. In it, you can see the coupling head returning Tool 1 to its "parking spot" and decoupling the tool. It moves to Tool 2 and re-engages the locking-mechanism and pulls away with Tool 2.

PRINT PROCESS STORY BOARD
Borrowing from the ideas of other printers on the market, the design of the printer enclosure puts practicality first. Informed by user feedback, the enclosure is simple, robust, and serviceable.

MACHINING
While building the POC machine, I was able to get a lot of hours on various CNC and manual machines.

LEARNING FROM MISTAKES
To ensure long-term success for all the products and designs I work on, I’ve had to grow and develop new skills and services as a professional designer. I spent many years adapting this aspect of industrial design into my work, and I love spending time on projects where I get to put my Digital Prototyping skills to the test.
